The DNA of Great Skin: Everything You Need to Know About Polynucleotides

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the world of aesthetics lately, you’ve likely heard the word Polynucleotides popping up everywhere. It’s the "tweakment" everyone is talking about, and for good reason!

As a nurse practitioner, I am constantly looking for treatments that don’t just "mask" aging but actually repair the skin from within. Polynucleotides are the gold standard for this. They are a true investment in your skin health, rather than just a quick fix.

In this guide, I’ll break down what they are, why I’m obsessed with them (both professionally and personally), and why they might just be the missing piece in your skincare journey.

What Exactly Are Polynucleotides?

Think of polynucleotides as the "building blocks" of your skin. Scientifically speaking, they are fragments of DNA (usually derived from salmon or trout DNA, which is incredibly compatible with human skin) that act as biostimulators.

Unlike dermal fillers, which add volume to "fill" a gap, polynucleotides work by sending signals to your cells to:

• Produce more collagen and elastin.

• Repair damaged tissue.

• Boost hydration.

• Calm inflammation (great for rosacea or redness!).

Essentially, they tell your skin to start acting like "younger" skin again.

My Clinic Favourites: The Brands I Trust

I am very picky about what I stock in my clinic. Quality and safety are my non-negotiables.

PolyPhil & Plinest: These are my absolute go-to’s for general rejuvenation. You might hear both names mentioned, but here’s a little secret: they are exactly the same! They come from the very same factory and offer incredible, consistent results for skin quality and texture.

Ameela: When we need something a bit "extra," I reach for Ameela. It is a higher-strength product (25mg per ml), making it fantastic for more significant repair. I’m also thrilled that Ameela is now fully CE marked following its rebrand a few years ago. I know the lack of a CE mark was off-putting for some in the past, but you can now rest assured it meets the highest European safety standards.

Managing Expectations: Skin Health vs. Filling

This is the most important thing to understand before booking: Polynucleotides are not fillers.

If you have deep hollows under your eyes (the "tear trough"), polynucleotides won’t physically "fill" that space like a gel filler would. However, what they do do is thicken the delicate, crepey skin in that area. By making the skin stronger, thicker, and healthier, the hollowing becomes significantly less noticeable because the skin is no longer translucent and fragile.

It’s about improving the canvas, not just padding the frame.

The Power of the "Combo": Better Together

One of the things I love most about regenerative medicine is how well these products play together. In my clinic, I often combine treatments to target different layers of the skin.

For Barcode Lines: I love pairing Polynucleotides with Revitalis by Croma. The polynucleotides go in to repair and regenerate the skin tissue, while Revitalis (a powerful skin booster) provides deep, intense hydration. It’s a "repair and hydrate" powerhouse that smooths vertical lip lines beautifully.

The Ultimate Cellular Repair: For those looking for the absolute gold standard in skin quality, I also love combining polynucleotides with Sunekos. Sunekos is another fantastic regenerative injectable that uses a specific formula of amino acids and hyaluronic acid. When used alongside polynucleotides, you are essentially attacking aging from every angle, stimulating new collagen while providing the specific nutrients your cells need to thrive. It is the ultimate in cellular repair.

Why I’m a Personal Fan (My Own Results)

I never recommend a treatment I wouldn’t have myself. I have personally undergone a course of three polynucleotide treatments specifically for my under-eye region.

The results? My skin feels firmer, looks brighter, and the fine lines have softened beautifully. To keep those results "topped up," I now have a maintenance treatment every 9 months. It’s become a non-negotiable part of my own aging-gracefully plan!

The Real Talk: FAQs

Does it hurt?

I’ll be completely honest with you: yes, it does sting. Because of the pH of the product, you will feel a sharp, stinging sensation as it is injected. The good news? It is incredibly short-lived. The discomfort usually lasts only as long as the injection itself, and most patients find it very manageable given how quickly the treatment is over.

Is there downtime?

Yes, and this is important for your diary planning! You may have some small "blebs" (tiny bumps) or swelling for 24–48 hours. However, bruising is quite common, especially around the delicate eye region where the skin is thin and full of tiny vessels. For this reason, I strongly advise not booking this treatment right before a big event like a wedding or a party. Give yourself at least a week for everything to settle.

How long does it take to see results?

Patience is key! Because we are waiting for your cells to regenerate, you won’t see the final result overnight. Most people start noticing a real "glow" after their second session, with the best results appearing a few weeks after the third.
